The basics of using SelfExtract-Pro

SelfExtract-Pro is a freeware zip/unzip product plus a shareware function to create self-extracting JAR files. JAR files on the Windows and Solaris platforms can be run by clicking on them just as an ".exe" file does under Windows. SE-Pro takes advantage of this fact to allow you to create self-extracting JAR's. The JAR files are essentially a zip file plus a Java program to do the self-extracting. Providing the target machine has a Java 2 VM installed then these self-extracting JAR's can be a convenient means of file distribution.

Creating archives

The interface for SE-Pro consists of basically two parts. The left side is a tabbed set of options which allow the creation of the archive and the setting of various options. The right hand side consists of a file chooser for selecting files and directories to add to the archive. When you select a file or directory you want to add to the ZIP or JAR, then press the "Add to list" button to add it. The archive is not created at that point, the files are only added to the list you see on the left of the display. If the file names or parent directory name are too big, the list columns can be dragged wider by placing the cursor over the column title as shown below:

When the list of files for the archive is complete then press the "Create zip" pr "Create S/E JAR" to create the archive itself. A progress bar will always be displayed while the archive is built.

Multiple selections

Multiple selections of files can be made either by (on Windows) holding down the "Ctrl" key while clicking selections or by using the "Select all" and "Invert selection" buttons.

Saving settings

The settings are always saved between sessions so their is no need to re-enter all the options.
